The origins of the College go back to the year 1913. In 1913 the British Government through its Governor gave an assent to start such an institution in consonance with the “Royal College of
Surgeons of England”. Dr. Rajab Ali Patel the then Indian Doctor agreed to establish such a college by dropping the prex ROYAL and hence the birth of the institution “college of Physicians and Surgeons” now popularly known as CPS took place. Initially it was registered under the Bombay.

inserted all Broad Speciality Diploma Courses (two years courses at the Post MBBS level) oered by the College Of Physicians &
Surgeons of Mumbai , with the following note.

The CPS has played an important role in training its Fellows in Research Methodology dissertation writing and computer orientation for both trainers and trainee through workshops. Up to March 2003 about 5519 MCPS and 5194 FCPS have graduated from this College. To ensure examination process in compare with international recognition, college invites examiners Royal Colleges of England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Middle East, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait. Joint Committee of Higher Medical training of England, which represents UK’s all Royal Colleges has recognised the Fellowship of CPS at par with its MCPS.
The US Boards of Internal Medicine, FRC Canada for the purpose of entry on the specialists register maintained by the General Medical Council, UK.
The Saudi Council for Health Specialities also recognises FCPS of the College at par with MRCP and FRCS awarded by Royal Colleges of UK. Besides, the colleges in collaboration with WHO has launched an awareness programme on reproductive health issues and to develop a curricula for postgraduate and undergraduate medical education and development of learning material.
The Department of Medical Education of the College through a series of workshops has trained over 12,000 teachers to update them with new methodologies. In 1996, this department was redesigned as “WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Educational Development of Health Personnel.”

To consider the various governments, semi-government, certain tertiary care hospitals, other private medical colleges and private hospitals for the training of the students in their respective speciality.

To strengthen the health care system in rural and peripheral areas by making specialists available where MD/MS/DM/MCh are not available.
Duration of both MD/MS & FCPS courses is 3 years, run in both government and private set up with similar quality standard of the host institute, similar academic activities, compulsory thesis work of 1 year duration under a qualified thesis guide with external review process (exposure to research methodology), and academic activities (library and journal facility, presentation in national and international conferences, research article publication, training program, workshop, and CME).
Clinical activity in both the courses is similar with respect to emergency case handling, surgical exposure, clinical case discussion, case exposure, availability of equipment and diagnostic tool, patient load to be handled, duty hour, night duty, leave entitled including maternity leave and other facilities.
Regarding the exit examination, in MD course, theory and practical examination is conducted in host institute. In practical examination, both internal (high chance of bias in evaluation process) and external examiners are present. Furthermore, passing theory examination is not an essential criterion of eligibility to appear in the practical examination.
